What is an outcross?

As a breeder we strive to improve the over all health and genetics of our pedigree cats, to ensure this we have implemented outcrossing to improve genetic diversity within our program and the bengal breed as a whole. So, what is an outcross? An outcross is done by breeding a cat that is unrelated to the current bengal population, this usually means either another purebred breed or domestic shorthair/longhair. Once crossed into the bengal breed it does take four generations to reach SBT (pure) again. Thankfully TICA allows breeders to register these crosses to accurately track the new pedigrees.

As time goes on we will update and manage this section to help educate owners and other breeders on the benefits of improving overall genetic diversity via outcrossing. All outcross kittens will be posted to this page that are available for adoption.

Outcrossing Benefits

1. Reduction of inbreeding depression: Outcrossing can reduce the buildup of harmful recessive genes that are associated with inbreeding.

2. Expansion of the gene pool: Outcrossing brings in new genes, allowing breeders to introduce new traits or improve existing ones.

3. Improved health: Increased genetic diversity can lead to improved health and resistance to genetic disorders and diseases.

4. Maintenance of breed character: Outcrossing can help to maintain the desired breed characteristics while avoiding the negative effects of inbreeding.

Therefore, outcrossing can be an important tool for breeders who aim to improve the genetic health and diversity of their breed.
